I always used server-side Javascript with Microsoft's Remote Scripting and my JSRS library. It allowed me to easily marshal any manner of Javascript objects back and forth across the divide.

Take a look at Michael Garnett's RSOPOST and Object Transfer Library at http://www.ashleyit.com/rs/rso/ - it was written in 2001 and was way ahead of its time.

XIN already supports serverside javascript + ajax in one bundle.
This is an example: http://www.xindesk.com/calc.asp?locationSetTrue(1,1,1);010
And the code: http://www.naltabyte.se/calculator.htm
