Firebug is certainly on the same level as jQuery. Without them javascript would still be deemed unusable by the majority of developers.

I could name a lot of technologies that have been around for years but are left on the shelf because the last mile of usability has not been added.

DE, you know I'm a massive fan of jQuery, but yeah, what Oscar says. I see it as a perfect example of an Ajax-era technology. i.e. it doesn't magically give us any new functionality (in the same way HTML5 does), it simply lets us do what we could do before, but better.

I'd also argue the impact of Firebug and the more recent WebKit tools have been just as significant. And same for all the documentation about Javascript et al, without which most of us would still be stabbing in the dark.

@DE : while I use jQuery everyday, it shouldn’t be on the time line for various reasons. One, yes, AJAX is harder by its self, but not unusable by any means. Two, there are a LOT of AJAX libraries out there, jQuery is simply one of them. 3. jQuery didn’t even come out until 2006! Thats nearly 7 years after AJAX came out.

and to Mahemoff, congrats! You have a dream job of mine I’d do anything for that job, good luck!

Would expect to see JQuery on the timeline. Ajax wasn’t particularly usable before that.
