Appreciate the good write-up on what I would agree has been an under-utilized tool. I've used fragment identifiers with good effect to facilitate what I'd character as rudimentary cross-domain communication while integrating a 3rd party video service into a relatively closed CMS platform.

As for Nathar's question, I haven't run into any window.location.hash compatibility issues with IE6/IE7 and all versions of Safari and Firefox.

For the record and for solicitation of advice, when I tried porting our web app to Safari 1, 2 when it first came out, we found that our use of fragments didn't work. Safari sometimes fails to register a change in fragment. It works fine in Safari 3. Do you have any stats of whether it is supported in older Firefoxes and older IEs?
